With this solo project, Sharkey burrows deep into the smoother sound that his previous band, Clockcleaner, had folded under, and finds his own voice. Between his debut EP, 4, and follow-up 7", 2, Puerto Rico Flowers has established a rich, saturated sound and ever-surprising pop sensibilities. His musical evolution continues on his first full-length LP, 7, which features pulsing streams of synth and rich bass lines rallied onward by subdued war drums. All this is alchemized by the emphatic voice of Sharkey himself, with his signature croon dipping towards John Cale and Dave Gahan. "Freezing Tears" places a steady beat behind the wheel while Sharkey's flowing vocals shift melancholic gears, and "After The Weekend" sees Puerto Rico Flowers exploring new, quieter places. The anthemic quality "Let's Make Friends" is revisited on "3 Sisters" and "I Feel Good". Bass-heavy and foreboding, Sharkey wrote this song in the shower while thinking to himself that he would never have to feel suspicious of a woman ever again, at least when fidelity is on the line. "3 Sisters", the first digital single by PRF, is a lush, driving 6-minute epic that builds considerably on the swift one-two punch of last year's 4 EP. Sharkey explains the inspiration for this song: "My ex-girlfriend's sister decided to marry a little greasy fat Italian man who ran a restaurant. That, coupled with a number of other drawbacks, was when I knew that I was up to my chin and had to run. It just took me this long to record it."
